become familiar with getting up and riding the board. This
course focuses on water starts, basic board skills, and
water re-launching of the kite. Also covered in this class
safety issues in the water, self rescue and recovery.

My name is Dave Loop and I have been coaching kiteboarding since 1998. I have been on the road teaching clinics and kiteboarding
lessons all over the East coast and various other locations for over 10 years. I have instructed over 2000 lessons in this period of time.
Most of these lessons in the early years were to new kiteboarding retailers or shop owners. The rest of these lessons have been
students who have come through our lesson center. The H2air lesson program has been written about in dozens of publications
including the Washington Post, Delaware Today, Baltimore Sun, Men’s Journal and more...

Over the years kiting has grown rapidly as a sport. As this happened kiting has become a mainstream sport, and thus a lot of
"mainstream" lesson programs have appeared. As a result of this I feel that the quality of kiteboarding lessons in the industry has
suffered immensely. I opened H2air as a lesson center in 2003 to address the demand for instruction in the mid-Atlantic.
At H2air Kiteboarding my goal is to teach you how to kiteboard. My goal is not to “bleed” you for time flying a trainer kite for days on end,
nor is it to make you do body drags until you are coughing up fish.  I have had numerous students who come from other kiteboarding
programs who have had 5 or six lessons (20 hours in some cases) and still can't land or launch a kite safely. If you are crashing your kite
constantly in a lesson, something is wrong. If the school you’re going to is doing this to you they are wasting your time and your $$.

H2air is not a discount lesson center. If you are looking to cut corners or you think you are saving money with a cheap alternative, look
elsewhere. What I teach you here will make you a safer kiter and will ultimately save you money in the long run.

All lessons are taught with our premium Slingshot kites and boards. I will only teach you on  your own gear If I approve of the gear you are
using.

Learn right, have fun, leave happy!

Sincerely
Dave Loop

My lessons are  in depth and and to the point.  I will go
through as much as you are able to absorb. Quality, safety
and understanding is the objective to my lessons. I want
you to leave feeling comfortable and confident.
Lessons
are generally (3) hours long.
This seems to be the magic
number for most new kiters to understand what is going on
and not overload the brain..
All gear is included with the
exception of footware and wetsuits.
Please read through
our lesson program in the yellow column. It goes over all of
the skills we will try to cover. Some students take longer
some learn faster. You will not leave this lesson
disappointed, and you will definitely have a great time.
POWERED KITEBOARDING LESSON CENTER
We are now using HEADZONE communications
systems in our private lessons. This powerful
new  system helps us work with you directly. It is
safer, and saves time. This helps you learn to
kiteboard more efficiently. This saves you money
and helps you get more out of your lesson. We
are one of the few schools in the USA with this
system.

kite safety techniques, rules and procedures you can easily get hurt. I am not trying to
scare you into a lesson, I am stating a fact. My primary mission in teaching you is to
get you to instinctively act and react to what your kite is asking for. After you have an
understanding of this  I can move on to getting you up and riding. Kiteboarding is very
similar to flying a plane in many circumstances. You need to be able to multi-task
your brain. There is a good amount of coordination involved. These three actions will
give you and myself the confidence that you are ready to go to the next level.

Taking a lesson will save you time and money. I supply all the gear during your
lesson.  You will have the right kite and the right board at all times. This will give you
the chance to learn how to fly the kite without wrecking your own gear. 98% of the
time a newbie buys a kite and goes out without a lesson they usually smash the kite
up.

Conditions play a huge roll when learning. After you take a lesson from us or any
school you still must
have the patience to use your gear in the right
weather and wind conditions
. Wind speed and direction play a critical
factor as to what is safe and what is not. In the beginning keep your kiting to
conditions that are no more than 10-17mph and with side shore winds. If you stick
to this you should be golden. Don't try to go out when frontal boundries are
passing through or storms.

Remember
We do not supply booties or wetsuits.  You will need to buy, borrow or steal those
yourself. We do sell them, but do not alway have all sizes.

Lessons teach these key elements:

Safety:
Safety is #1. I can not allow you to leave a lesson without teaching you how
to be safe.
A lot of safety is common sense. I can't teach you that.
Rigging, safety releases and technique, space management, wind direction, wind
velocity and a multitude of other aspects fall under safety.
Situations always change
you have to be aware of your surroundings.
What I do want to teach you is how to
see a situation and how to react to it.

Wind Window: If you don't know what the wind window is it makes the lesson much
more difficult. I will teach you all about this important mental model. The wind
window is essential knowledge to the understanding of your kites power.

Landing: Why do I list landing before launching? Kiteboarding is a community sport.
Just about any beach you go to someone is going to come in and need a kite
landing. In an emergency you need to be able to get to someones kite and take it
down. I teach you how to do this the right way.
Landing a kite is serious stuff, and in
heavy wind can really make a good day go bad if you landing skills suck! Hesitation
is unacceptable. You should always be aware of your surroundings, and watch for
kiters needing a landing. This is especially the case when it is gusty, bad weather is
moving in, or you are landing on a populated beach.

Launching: Just as important as landing, but with launching a kite "you" can make
the launch decision whether it is your kite or someone else's. It is ok to abort or say
no when you don't feel comfortable about launching your kite or someone else's!
A
bad launch can be extremely dangerous
, not to mention some kiters will take it
personally and want to "kick your butt". I am serious. Some of the only beach brawls
that I have seen in this sport have been the result of a botched launch. To top this
about
95% of accidents kiteboarding are a launch error.

Hooked in Flying:
In order to ride you have to be able to hook in to your chicken loop
and unhook. The chicken loop is an essential piece of gear on most control bar
setups and also functions as your safety release. It is the main safety mechanism on
many brands of kites. You should practice releasing from it even after your lessons.
Furthermore, the chicken loop has a lot to do with the tuning of your kite. I will teach
you the hows and whys of the amazing chicken loop.

Body Drag: This is really the first step of getting hooked on kiting. Once you do a body
drag if you have any pulse at all you will be addicted. The body drag teaches you a
multitude of  kite skills. Kite power, turning, torque, and direction all come from the
body drag. It is one of the highlights of the lesson. Don't wear loose clothing. We
have seen many yard sales of apparel during the body drag lessons.

Bail on the Fly: This is the final part of your first part of the kite lesson. In this lesson I
will have you release the kite under power simulating an emergency situation.

Board Float: Board float is the first step towards getting up and riding. My mission
here is to teach you how to direct your board using front or back foot pressure while
steering the kite. Until you pass this stage it is extremely difficult to get up and ride.

Power up: This is your first dive with your kite to get you up and riding. Most students
(but not all) crash the kite on this first attempt of getting up on the board. We keep
repeating this until you are up and riding.

Riding: At this point you are up and moving. The goal now is to talk you through your
power-stroke up and down while I ride next to you on the PWC. This is the most
exciting part of the lesson, and you will be stoked out of your mind.

On the Fly Bail: After I am comfortable with your riding I will once again go back to
safety and go over releasing the kite while riding, and what we like to call a controlled
crash. The controlled crash teaches you to be aware of your crash so when you
come out of the water you are in a better position to relaunch immediately.

Self Rescue: At this point in the camp you should feel confident about your abilities. I
will teach you last ditch self rescue.  This is taught throughout the entire camp, but
we like to go over it officially at the end of the camp.

Landing and Launching: You are probably thinking "hey didn't we already learn this!  I
don't know DID YOU!
Like I said landing and launching is not only important for you,
it is important to everyone near you. We recap this until  you and we feel you are
doing it safely.
do lessons with a S,SE,SW, wind direction and in less than 20mph of wind. If the wind is west it is directly onshore at our
lesson area. Direct onshore wind makes for a difficult lesson because you end up getting too close to the beach too
quickly.  If the wind has an easterly flow it will also make for a very difficult lesson. The east wind creates a lot of turbulence
and unpredictable gusts and lulls. The reason for this is that the wind comes over the peninsula from the ocean. The
temperature of the land and obstruction of the land mass causes the instability and therefor makes your lesson more like
riding a rodeo bull rather than a kite. We can not control mother nature, so if it is windy and we can't teach you it is because
of the wind direction.
